For families & loved ones

Helping someone you love.

If someone you care about is struggling, you are already doing the hardest part, looking for a way to help. Here is how Roots and Wings can support her and her children, and how you can help her take the first step.

Where to start

You don't have to have the perfect words.

You do not need a plan or a speech. Often the most powerful thing you can say is simple: "I love you, I am not judging you, and I found a place that could help, where you would not have to be apart from your kids." Then let her know she is not alone in figuring it out, because she is not, and neither are you.

Being honest with you

What we are, and what we're not.

Roots and Wings is a safe, structured sober living home, a place to live alongside other women who understand, while she rebuilds. It is not a detox or a licensed medical treatment center, and she will need to be through detox and substance-free before moving in. If that is not where she is yet, call us anyway. We will help point you toward the right medical help first, and we will still be here when she is ready.

The biggest worry, answered

Her children can come with her.

For a lot of mothers, the fear of being separated from their children is the very thing that keeps them from getting help. At Roots and Wings, her kids live here with her, in a safe, welcoming home. Recovery and motherhood are not a choice she has to make.

How you can help

Small things that make a real difference.

  • Make the first call with herSitting beside her while she calls, or calling first yourself to learn how it works, takes the fear out of the unknown.
  • Help with the logisticsA ride to a tour, help packing, watching the kids for an hour, the practical support that makes a first step possible.
  • Help with cost, if you canSome families help cover the first month. Ask us about the rate and options. FAKE-WAITING: confirm whether family can pay on her behalf.
  • Keep showing upRecovery is not a straight line. Steady, non-judgmental support from someone who loves her matters more than anything.
